Below we're taking a look at how the Coolpix P1000 compares to two cameras with 1/2.3" sensors - the Panasonic DC-FZ80 and Canon PowerShot SX60 HS - as well as Sony's Cyber-shot RX10 III, whose larger 1"-type sensor should give it a leg up on the competition.
Image quality is about what you're expect from a camera with a 1/2.3" sensor. Nice at low sensitivities but noisy at higher ISOs, when there's less light. The slow lens on the P1000 does not help matters, especially at longer focal lengths. Raw image qualityThe 16MP, 1/2.3" sensor on the P1000 is competitive with Panasonic's FZ80 in terms of detail capture, but lags behind the RX10 III which, to be fair, has a very nice lens and a larger, higher resolution sensor. At higher ISOs fine detail starts to disappear, though the P1000 has a slight edge over its small-sensored peers. The advantage of the RX10 III's larger 1"-type sensor is clearly visible here. At very high ISOs the P1000 has very little detail left to work with. JPEG image qualityThe Coolpix P1000 produces JPEGs with pleasing colors that are about as punchy as those from Canon, whose cameras are often cited for their pleasant color rendering. While it can't compete with the RX10 III for the reasons mentioned above, the P1000's sharpening algorithm does as much as possible given the amount of captured detail it has to work with. At middle ISOs the P1000 looks a bit better than the SX60 and FZ80 though, as expected, the RX10 III leads the pack. At very high sensitivities there's little detail left, since the 1/2.3" sensor is being stretched beyond its limits.
